Left to their own, chickens have complex and nuanced communication through their vocalizations. From warning about predators to alerting one another to food sources, chicks peeping to find their mothers and singing as they settle in at night, roosters, hens and their chicks use a variety of sounds that communicate distress, contentment, joy and alertness. Maybe it's easier if we just think of these complex and sensitive birds as insensate objects?
