Calming Bath Salts
am a sucker for anything bath related, from fizzy bombs to soothing
soaks, especially when it starts to get chilly, of course. The drawback
to many of the products, though, is that they can be expensive but also
even the cruelty-free ones may have artificial dyes, perfumes and other
harsh additives I’d rather not be soaking in. If we can use better
quality ingredients and still make luxurious bath products for a
fraction of what they would cost at the store, why not give it a try?
Especially with something as simple to make as bath salts, we can keep
enjoying our little pleasures without harm to our skin or our wallets.
With the money you save, you can sponsor an animal at a sanctuary or
donate to a homeless shelter.
This recipe for bath salts uses specific essential oils but you can use
this basic formula for any scent or scent combination you like. Here, I
combine earthy, calming vetiver and soothing, sweet lavender with a
little bit of uplifting zest by way of grapefruit essential oil.
Vetiver and lavender oils are thought to relieve anxiety and
nervousness and grapefruit oil is thought to be cleansing. Mixed
together with coarse sea salt (you can find this in the bulk section of
a natural foods store or order online) and Epsom salts (sold in most
drug stores, this reduces inflammation), you have all you need for a
refreshing and stress-relieving bath. Some people might like to add
baking soda, which softens the bath water, to their mixture but it’s
too abrasive for my sensitive skin. If sensitive skin is not a problem
for you, feel free to add the baking soda.
Calming Bath Salts
3 cups coarse sea salts
1 1/2 cups Epsom salts
½ cup baking soda, optional
30 drops vetiver
18 drops lavender
15 drops grapefruit oil
Mix together well: shaking in a large bag or a simply mixing
in a bowl works fine. If you want a finer, more uniform blend, pulse in
a food processor. Store in a container and scoop handfuls into your
bath as it fills. Feel the stress melt away…
