Healing Calendula Oil

 Healing Calendula Oil

I have been impressed for years by the healing properties of the various plants available to us. Calendula is one of those plants that offers a potent punch in a humble flower. Calendula officinalis is a marigold-like flower with buoyant orange and yellow blossoms that is a natural pest repellent in the garden and, in our bathroom cabinets, a powerful topical ally against inflammation, acne and rashes (including the dreaded diaper rash) as well as a gentle but effective treatment for minor wounds, like burns, cuts and scrapes. Years ago, I gave some calendula oil I’d made to a friend whose son had a chronic rash: This was the only thing that worked. With anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, calendula packs a wallop. If you haven’t grown your own, look for dried calendula flowers at herbal shops and natural foods stores. Also, put calendula on your list for next summer if you aren’t already growing it.

Healing Calendula Oil

1/2 cup dried calendula flowers
1 cup extra virgin olive oil

Place the flowers in a clean, dry glass jar with a fitted lid. Pour the olive oil over it and stir it up with a chopstick.

Allow the glass to sit in a sunny spot for a month or so. Try to give it a little shake every day.

After a month, strain the flowers and place the calendula oil in a glass jar. Store in a cool, dry place and use as needed.
